What to do when your flight is cancelled or delayed
Does the airline have to find me another flight if mine is cancelled?
Yes. When a flight is cancelled, the airline must offer you, at your choice, a refund of the ticket or re-routing to your destination at the earliest opportunity, at no cost (Art. 8 of EU Regulation 261/2004). Re-routing can be with another airline or from a nearby airport. Ask for it in writing and name the flight you want.
Can I buy another ticket myself and claim the money?
If the airline offers you no alternative, the EU Court of Justice ruled (case C‑83/22, 2023) that you can claim the cost of a ticket you bought yourself, as long as the price was reasonable and necessary. Keep the cancellation email, the new ticket and proof that you asked the airline to re-route you.
My flight is delayed. Can I take another one?
You can, but below a 5-hour delay the airline will not refund the original ticket if you abandon it. From 5 hours you have the right to give up the flight and get your money back. The €250–600 compensation depends on when your flight arrives at its destination.
Do I still get compensation if I accept another flight?
For cancellations, yes: €250, €400 or €600 per passenger, if you were told less than 14 days in advance and the cause was not extraordinary. The amount can be halved if the alternative flight gets you to your destination close to the original time.

Direct flights come from the departure boards of Romanian airports, updated every 10 minutes. Ticket prices come from other travellers' recent searches on Aviasales; the price and seats are confirmed on the seller's website.
