Wizz Air Hungary (code W6) is the parent company of Wizz Air, based in Hungary. On Wizz tickets in Romania, you may also see codes W4 (Wizz Air Malta) and W9 (Wizz Air UK) — check your boarding pass to see which code your flight has. Wizz Air Hungary is an airline from the European Union, so Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 applies to all its flights departing from the EU and those arriving in the EU, including those from outside the Union.

When you receive compensation from Wizz Air

  • The flight arrived at its final destination with at least 3 hours delay (the arrival time counts, not the departure time).
  • The flight was cancelled and you found out less than 14 days before departure.
  • You were denied boarding (overbooking).
  • Amounts: €250 for up to 1,500 km, €400 between 1,500 and 3,500 km (and for all EU flights over 1,500 km), €600 for over 3,500 km.
  • You do not receive compensation if the delay was caused by weather, an air traffic control strike, or other extraordinary circumstances.

How to claim your money

  1. Submit your claim via the form in the Wizz Air help center (Contact → Submit a claim), including the flight number, date, booking code, and boarding pass.
  2. Wizz Air states that they respond to claims within 30 days.
  3. If they refuse or do not respond, you can file a complaint with ANPC for flights departing from Romania; for flights from other countries, contact the national body of the departure country (the official list is on the European Commission website).

Assignment and representation at Wizz Air

You can claim the money yourself or let a recovery company or a lawyer do it for you, either via power of attorney or through assignment (you transfer the right to compensation to them, and they collect the money and give you your share). Wizz Air accepts both methods, but with stricter rules than other airlines:

  1. First, you must submit the claim yourself, directly to Wizz Air. A company or a lawyer can only submit for you after that. Exception: another passenger from the same booking can submit on your behalf, provided they have proof of your power of attorney.
  2. Companies submit via a separate Wizz Air platform, where only companies, law firms, and lawyers can create an account, not individuals.
  3. The data must exactly match the booking: name, the email used for the booking, nationality, booking code, flight, date, and airports. A single difference and the claim is rejected.
  4. Your signature on the assignment or power of attorney must have full probative force (according to Hungarian law): a document written and signed entirely by hand, signed in front of two witnesses (with their names and addresses on the document), notarized, countersigned by a lawyer, or signed with a qualified electronic signature. A typed name or a checkbox on a website is not enough.
  5. In the case of assignment, Wizz Air deducts a €50 administration fee. From €250, €200 remains, from which the company then takes its commission.
  6. Wizz Air responds within 30 days, and the money goes into the company's account, which then transfers it to you according to the signed contract.

What this means for you

  • If you apply yourself and Wizz Air pays, you receive the full amount (€250, €400, or €600), without the €50 fee and without commission.
  • A company is useful mainly if Wizz Air refuses or does not respond within 30 days: your direct claim is already submitted, and the company can continue the process, including with ANPC or in court.
  • Wizz Air states that payment made to your representative closes the claim: you cannot claim again for the same flight.
  • The €50 fee was challenged in Germany by a consumer protection association, which won in the first instance (Berlin). We do not know if the ruling has become final.
