Wizz Air UK (code W9) is the British airline of the Wizz Air group. Since the United Kingdom is no longer part of the EU, the flight direction matters:
- From Romania to the UK: Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 applies (the flight departs from the EU).
- From the UK to Romania: UK261 regulations apply, with the same thresholds but in pounds (approximately £220, £350, or £520).
When you receive compensation
- The flight arrived at its final destination with at least 3 hours delay (the arrival time counts, not the departure time).
- The flight was cancelled and you found out less than 14 days before departure.
- You were denied boarding (overbooking).
- Amounts: €250 for up to 1,500 km, €400 between 1,500 and 3,500 km (and for all flights from the EU over 1,500 km), €600 over 3,500 km.
- You do not receive compensation if the delay was caused by weather, an air traffic control strike, or other extraordinary circumstances.
How to claim your money
- Submit your claim via the form in the Wizz Air help center (Contact → Submit a claim).
- Wizz Air states they respond to claims within 30 days.
- For flights from Romania, if they refuse or do not respond, file a complaint with ANPC; for those from the UK, with the CAA.
Assignment and representation at Wizz Air
You can claim the money yourself or let a recovery company or a lawyer do it for you, either via power of attorney or through assignment (you transfer the right to compensation to them, and they collect the money and give you your share). Wizz Air accepts both methods, but with stricter rules than other airlines:
- First, you must submit the claim yourself, directly to Wizz Air. A company or a lawyer can only submit for you after that. Exception: another passenger from the same booking can submit on your behalf, provided they have proof of your authorization.
- Companies submit via a separate Wizz Air platform, where only companies, law firms, and lawyers can create an account, not individuals.
- The details must exactly match the booking: name, email used for the booking, nationality, booking code, flight, date, and airports. A single difference and the claim is rejected.
- Your signature on the assignment or power of attorney must have full probative force (according to Hungarian law): a document written and signed entirely by hand, signed in front of two witnesses (with their names and addresses on the document), notarized, countersigned by a lawyer, or signed with a qualified electronic signature. A typed name or a checkbox on a website is not enough.
- With assignment, Wizz Air deducts a €50 administration fee. From €250, €200 remains, from which the company then takes its commission.
- Wizz Air responds within 30 days, and the money goes to the company's account, which then transfers it to you according to the signed contract.
What this means for you
- If you apply yourself and Wizz Air pays, you receive the full amount (€250, €400, or €600), without the €50 fee and without commission.
- A company is useful mainly if Wizz Air refuses or does not respond within 30 days: your direct claim is already submitted, and the company can continue the process, including at ANPC or in court.
- Wizz Air states that payment made to your representative closes the claim: you cannot claim again for the same flight.
- The €50 fee was challenged in Germany by a consumer protection association, which won in the first instance (Berlin). We do not know if the ruling has become final.

For Wizz Air UK (W9) flights, assignment deeds and powers of attorney follow English law (as a "deed"), not Hungarian law.
